Hamburg is the second largest city in the Federal Republic of Germany, and its largest port. It is the sixth largest city in the European Union by population.
The city is famous for its many canals and bridges, with about 2,500 bridges (car, train and pedestrian bridges), making it the most European city in terms of the number of bridges, more than the bridges of Amsterdam, London and Venice combined. It is sometimes called the "Venice of the North". Hamburg is not located directly on the sea, but on the Elbe River, which is relatively wide and navigable, which connects it to the North Sea.
