Lesson 88: Configuring NTP on Cisco Devices
We are back again with a new topic in our Free CCNA Video series and in this video, we will understand how you can configure NTP on Cisco devices.
Why is it important to Configure NTP on Cisco Devices?
It is quite an easy and necessary step to configure NTP on a Cisco Device whenever you are configuring a new router or switch. You must know the reason behind why it’s so important to configure it. Well, all the SYSLOG entries are stamped with time they have taken place. If the time is different from one device to another, then it can make troubleshooting events to occur and event correlation difficult.
In order to avoid it from happening, one can use NTP (Network Time Protocol) and synchronize all the network devices to a single time source. Moreover, there are several other networking services as well that rely on the networking device to remain in sync. Network devices stay in sync by utilizing the NTP and the Stratum Value is used to define how far an NTP server is from the atomic clock.
How to perform NTP configuration on Cisco Devices?
On an internal server, as an NTP server, you can click on the NTP option to find the NTP services by default on a box. You can configure devices R1 and R2 to sync time with NTP server and then you will have to write the IP address of the NTP server, that is 20.1.1.3.
This procedure has to be done on both the routers and then you can check if the routers are synchronized or not. The stratum value will be 2 because the server is using R1 by default.
For checking your device R2, you have to click on the option ‘show NTP status’ and you can see the time on that device synchronized with server 20.1.1.3.
This is how you can set up NTP client configuration on Cisco devices.
