The Abraham-Yahweh Deal
Abraham doesn't become the patriarch of the Hebrew people after completing a particular feat. Rather, it happens through a deal. God/Yahweh gives him a lineage, and Abraham gives him absolute obedience. The details change over time according to Yahweh's wishes. And there is a constant need to reiterate the deal and make sure that we're still on the same page.
