Pregnancy after breast cancer: is it possible? - data from the POSITIVE study
Fertility preservation and the dream of motherhood are topics of discussion during breast cancer treatment. Pregnancy itself, according to previous studies, is safe for patients after treatment, with data suggesting better outcomes for women who become pregnant after completing treatment. However, what was unknown was the safety of pausing treatment to conceive.
A study published in May 2023 in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Positive Trial, was designed to evaluate the safety, with respect to a breast cancer event (recurrence, metastasis, or new primary), of temporarily interrupting endocrine therapy to attempt pregnancy in premenopausal women.
Long-term follow-up data is needed to better inform the safety of this strategy. However, these results provide a better understanding of the effect of pregnancy on breast cancer outcomes in women.
