Why do they feed camels snakes?
Why do desert Arabs feed their camels snakes? It may seem strange, even cruel, and some might think it's a punishment, but in reality, it's quite different. There's a dangerous disease called surra. When a camel contracts this disease, it stops eating and drinking and stares at the sun from sunrise to sunset, remaining in this state until death. If left untreated, the camel dies in just a few days; worse yet, the disease quickly spreads to other camels. The treatment for this disease involves feeding the camel a venomous snake,
then having the camel drink water until tears begin to flow from its eyes. These tears contain a serum against several diseases that afflict camels, including surra. The camel usually recovers within a few days.
