Snake alcohol is widely consumed in China and Vietnam. The process begins with a captured snake being starved for 3-4 days. It is then placed in a bottle of rice wine, and the snake, suffering from hunger, begins to drink the wine. At this point, it vomits and detoxifies. The snake's venom is broken down by the ethanol in the wine. After this process is complete, the snake is placed in a new, clean bottle, where it is aged for another 5-6 months. The result is snake alcohol with an alcohol content of 40%. In Asia, this drink is believed to help with baldness, sciatica, and other ailments.
