Meet the American Pika! ✨❤️
Found high above the tree line on Rocky slopes and mountain meadows, these cutie toots are a hoot to watch!
They’re always running around, keeping tabs on you and everything happening around em’ while collecting food to store for winter! 🌸 🍞
While these little dinner roll shaped fluffballs may look like a giant hamster or guinea pig, they’re actually not rodents, but members of the rabbit family! Hence their relatively big ears and tiny tails (yeah, they have em’ under their big ol’ fluffy butts!) 🐰
Pikas are an indicator species for the effects of climate change- while there’s a whole bunch of them here in the Colorado Rockies these days, there’s concern that they may not be able to handle climbing summer temperatures and lack of snowfall in the winter- they use snow to insulate themselves!❄️
