Chess set production begins with the pawns. All have to be consistently made since there’s 16 of them to look at. Back when we were in the design stages of this build, Dawn made a sample set, hand turning one of each piece (the knight was CNC carved). We quickly realized that maintaining consistency among pieces and batches of sets is challenging. Luckily I discovered a duplicator attachment for our lathe. It uses templates to guide you through the carve, resulting in perfect copies. I first model the pieces in 3D, then laser cut our own templates based on the designs.
