Raised as a nerd in Taiwan, I had never played sports or exercise until I came to US for graduate school at age 22. Unfamiliar activities scared me; unstable surfaces frightened me. I couldn't ski, jump, run, play sports and most of all - swim. In order to stimulate my brain growth and musculature development, I signed up on adult beginner swimming class. The degree of my fear of not able to breathe further disturbed limbs coordination. I had the strength to execute front crawl movements but I couldn't put them together. The more I was afraid of oxygen deprivation the more panic and unorganized my movement became. Even though I still can't front crawl far, I know every stroke and kick I make is making a difference in my body and mind. This is what life is about - what we take on through the journey, not the destination.
