The Day I Experienced a Working Beam Engine: This Is What Happened
The London Museum of Water and Steam in Brentford is a great place to visit if you're into old steam engines. As well as loads of smaller steam engines, they have 2 huge Cornish Beam Engines that used to pump water for London. They also have a small railway. On some visitor days, they actually steam up the Cornish beam engine so that it works. It's an amazing, if weird feeling as the motion and the thump of the pump heads is very low and vibrates through your whole body.
They also steam up the railway sometimes so that you can ride around the grounds. There are exhibits that show you how water was pumped and you can actually have a go at pumping yourself.
