QNH is the altimeter setting that shows altitude above mean sea level, the standard reference for flight operations. QFE sets the altimeter to read zero at a specific airfield, showing height above that airfield’s elevation. QNE, also known as the standard setting of 1013 hPa (29.92 inHg), is used at higher altitudes, especially during cruising flight.
The Transition Altitude is the altitude at which pilots switch from local QNH to the standard QNE setting. Above this point, all aircraft use the same reference, ensuring safe vertical separation. Conversely, the Transition Level is the lowest usable flight level available above the transition altitude, depending on local pressure conditions.
