How sheep shearing actually works today
When we think of wool, we often picture something dirty and matted. Yet, beneath this appearance, sheep's wool is surprisingly soft, clean, and smooth. Over time, it continues to grow and becomes increasingly thick, eventually making the sheep heavier and less agile. This is when shearing comes in. In the past, workers used large hand shears to remove the wool, one sheep at a time, in a slow and arduous process. Today, the process is much faster thanks to electric shears. Shearers follow the natural direction of the wool with precise movements, and the fleece often comes off in large sections.
