Dental prophylaxis, or professional dental cleaning, is a clinical oral hygiene procedure aimed at cleaning dental surfaces of bacterial plaque and calculus to prevent caries and periodontal disease (gingivitis). Dental biofilm bacteria can colonize and proliferate in the various insertion and protective tissues.
Four phases of dental prophylaxis:
