The Real Story Behind JAWS: America's Deadliest Shark Attack (1916)
In the summer of 1916, scientists and experts swore sharks were completely harmless to humans. A $500 reward went unclaimed for years because “no shark would ever attack a person.” Then, over just 12 terrifying days, the Atlantic Ocean proved them all catastrophically wrong.
Five shocking attacks. Four brutal deaths. One inland creek turned red with blood. A nation thrown into full panic — even President Woodrow Wilson declared war on sharks. This is the true, untold story that directly inspired Peter Benchley’s novel Jaws and Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster film.
From the sunny beaches of Beach Haven and Spring Lake to the impossible attacks miles inland in Matawan Creek, experience the real-life horror that changed America’s relationship with the ocean forever. Scientists said it couldn’t happen… until it did.
This is the gripping historical account of the 1916 Jersey Shore shark attacks — the summer that birthed modern shark terror.
