So in todays video we revisit St.Leonards church in Middleton where we talk about Old Canky or Owd Kankey the grave Robber.

This hidden pathway is not only a convenient shortcut, but it also provides a glimpse into the dark history of Middleton.
Old Kankey was an infamous old recluse type person who would during the day, watch burials taking place in the graveyard of St.Leonards church, but at night would sneak up to the freshly buried body, dig down to the deceased and steal the body.
He would dig a hole that was only big enough for one person to stand in, tie a rope around the body then drag it up to the surface.
He would then carry the body down what is now known as Kankey's Ginnel and across to the nearby River Irk where he would float the body down river into the city of Manchester and sell the body to doctors at the universities to be used for research, but not before stealing any valuables that may have been buried with them.

St.Leonards Church is a beautiful medieval church with stunning stained glass windows (one of which is the oldest war memorial - the flodden window) and intricate stonework.
It has a rich history dating back to the 12th century and is a peaceful place to visit and reflect.
