A suspect who allegedly harassed female students on a minibus in Yalova was detained following footage posted on social media.
The suspect was arrested by the court on charges of "sexual assault by harassment."
According to reports, the suspect, Y.Y., who allegedly harassed a university student on a minibus yesterday evening, was taken into custody following social media posts.
Yalova Governor Hülya Kaya released a statement on social media: "The social media posts made on October 7, 2024, were considered a tip-off, and the individual who allegedly harassed female university students was apprehended by our gendarmerie, and legal proceedings have been initiated."
According to the allegations, Y.Y. boarded a city minibus and harassed a university student who was on her way to the Akça Hatun Girls' Dormitory. The suspect reportedly got off at a shopping mall on the road.
Footage from the minibus later sparked widespread outrage on social media, and students in the dormitory reacted to the incident after claims that the individual had come to the dormitory area.
Students living in the dormitory gathered following the incident and chanted slogans to express their outrage.
The female students, chanting, "Don't stay silent, the longer you stay silent, the more it will be your turn," expressed their uneasiness every night because they were unsafe.
Provincial Director of Youth and Sports Salih Kılıç went to the dormitory and tried to calm the students by stating that the individual had been detained. The female students explained that the dormitory had been staffed by women for three years, but they wanted male security guards.
Meanwhile, the suspect, whose procedures were completed at the gendarmerie, was referred to the courthouse. Y.Y., who was brought to court on charges of "Sexual Assault by Harassment," was arrested and sent to prison.
