Dynamic X-Axis in Power BI (Last N Months)
In this video, we show you how to create a dynamic “Last N periods” x‑axis in Power BI that responds automatically to a slicer selection.
Want your line/column charts to always show a rolling window of time without hardcoding dates or constantly rebuilding visuals? Power BI doesn’t give you this behaviour out of the box, so what do you do? In this tutorial, we walk through a clean, reusable pattern to build a dynamic time window that updates your x‑axis automatically based on user selection.
You’ll learn how to:
Build a slicer‑driven “anchor period” (e.g. selected month or year)
Calculate a dynamic Last N periods window using DAX
Flag only the relevant dates so visuals respond correctly
Configure a line and column chart x‑axis that updates automatically with slicer changes
Keep the model flexible and scalable for different N‑period scenarios
This technique is extremely useful when users want to explore trends relative to a selected date rather than being stuck with fixed ranges.
Works great for: rolling 12‑month trends, last 6 periods analysis, financial reporting, operational KPIs, forecasting views, and executive dashboards.
