Eumaeus in the Odyssey, the noble swineherd is one of most important characters in Homer's epic poem. Eumaeus the swineherd is the first person Odysseus meets after he returns to Ithaca in disguise. Odysseus eats and sleeps with the loyal swineherd; Eumaeus appears to be the model of hospitality in the poem. What can Odysseus learn from this noble swineherd, this humble pig farmer as he continues his journey back home? Eumaeus' role in the Odyssey may be to illuminate for us certain character traits that Odysseus himself lacks or needs to develop if he is to overcome the problems that have been plaguing him on his travels.

This video focuses on Book 14 of Homer's Odyssey, provides summary and analysis of Book 14 and also discusses Eumaeus backstory. The swineherd's history, the struggles he has experienced seem to be an image of the suffering that Odysseus himself has suffered.
