From a scientific perspective, the beak performs several key functions. It plays a role in thermoregulation: through a dense network of blood vessels, the bird can release excess heat, using the beak as a kind of "radiator." Furthermore, it is a primary foraging tool—toucans use it to retrieve fruits from thin branches that they can't reach with their bodies. The beak also plays a role in defense and social behavior.
Occasionally, toucans' beaks are cut off—this is due solely to human activity, specifically poaching and illegal trade. The reason for this is the ornamental value of the beak, which is used to make souvenirs and jewelry. Such actions are cruel and have no scientific or practical justification.
Beak loss is critical: the bird loses the ability to feed normally, regulate body temperature, and defend itself. In the wild, this almost always leads to death.
To help these birds, veterinarians and volunteers are using modern technologies, including creating prosthetics using 3D printing. These devices partially restore beak function and give toucans a chance at survival, although they cannot completely replace the natural organ.
