If there is a trend here with found parked ships, IMO what seems consistent with them is:
The ship is not detected by the scanner at a distance nor even close up, no landing site marker that is.
The POI is not or has not been anything I normally see with civilian outpost variations, they all appear to be something I have not seen before.
The first capturable ship I found I was able to see from a distance; but the site was not visible from where I landed, it wasn't until I walked about 1000m to a 2nd POI to clear, that after clearing and searching from a hillside peak (Dogstar factory) that the ship was noticed. The other two were close to my landing site but not visible until I approached the site and was about 250M away that they were then noticeable
If the ship is at a non-hostile site then it likely is not accessible. If the ship is at a site that has NPCs with weapons in hand and appearing to stand guard, then that condition existing the ship at the site has been capturable three times now.
I think this means if you are a wanderer and are of the nature to explore fully most site you set down on, then you might find an unusual place in the distance and on approach might discover a capturable parked ship.
What's the likelihood of this? Is not going to be every time or nearly every time, it's just going to be a possibility and I'm making a guess here that you should find a capturable ship in 1 out of 20 set downs. The way I do this is to set down, get to an observation height by jetpack or by getting on top your ship, then visually survey the area for unusual shaped terrain, scan the point to see what data you get if you are in range. Then if it looks odd enough and you feel up to a hike, go take a look, sometimes it turns out interesting and sometimes there could be a parked capturable ship.
Don't do this if you don't like long nature hikes to nowhere and it would upset you if you don't like finding nothing.
