The birth of the border troops 100 years ago took place under extraordinary circumstances. Before 1917, border guards were called "guards." Historically, the border was divided into "distances," with one officer responsible for maintaining order at each. In fact, after the establishment of the border service on May 28, 1918, up to 90% of all "guards" from the pre-revolutionary period transferred to the Soviet Union. The first border district was established on the border with then-turbulent Finland, and in 1918, there was essentially no border in western Russia, only a shifting front line.
