PRUNING THE ROSE - HOW AND WHEN
Rule number one in rose pruning is RENEWAL.
The flower-bearing shoots must be continually renewed. When we see blackened wood at the base of a branch, it's starting to age and will therefore produce fewer flowers.
The goal is to create a spreading canopy with 5 or 6 well-spaced main branches.
It's very important to thin out the canopy so the rose gets plenty of light and can flower abundantly.
Thinning should ensure each branch bears a moderate number of flowering shoots.
It's important to control the direction of the apical buds on the branches to broaden the canopy outward.
