Four railroad crossing situations, each drawn as a diagram so you can see the layout before the
answer.
1. A crossbuck on its own, and what it actually requires of you
2. Gates down and lights flashing, and why driving around a gate is never an option
3. A train has passed but the lights are still on, which is the one that catches people out
4. Traffic queued on the far side, and why you do not start across
The trap in number 3 is a second train coming the other way. The first train hides it and its
noise covers the sound, which is why the signals stay active until the crossing is genuinely
clear. If your vehicle ever stalls on the tracks, get everyone out and away from it immediately,
then call the number on the blue emergency sign at the crossing.
No stopping distances are quoted here. How far back you must stop is state law and ranges widely;
the meaning of the crossbuck and the signals is federal and does not.
