The oprichniks are perhaps the most famous figures of the 16th century. In popular culture, they appear almost like demons in the service of Ivan the Terrible. Just think about it: black horsemen with grim faces, senselessly cruel, bloody, and utterly alien to all human nature. But if we stop and ask a simple question—how exactly did they live?—the familiar picture begins to crumble. And to understand this, it's pointless to start with executions and horror. We must first understand why a situation arose in the Tsardom of Muscovy in which the Tsar suddenly decided that ordinary power was no longer enough. And why he needed people outside the law, who became his main instrument of governing the country.
