Barcode verification is the process of grading the quality of 1D, 2D, and direct part mark (DPM) codes. An increasing number of regulated industries require barcode verification. Barcode verifiers provide guidance through the marking process to create codes which meet minimum quality standards. Cognex barcode verifiers use high quality optics, advanced algorithms, and simple software to demonstrate compliance to industry standard guidelines.

"Everyone knows what a barcode is. We see them on almost every product we use. But how do you know if the barcode is readable throughout the entire supply chain? You can check by using a barcode verifier, which grades the quality of the code to specific industry standards. Verification helps avoid costly product returns, package waste and printing errors and keep supply chains
moving efficiently. The key difference between barcode verifiers and barcode readers is that readers simply read the code while verifiers analyze and report a quality grade for the code verifiers generate an A through F letter grade using a standardized grading algorithm based on module or bar size, contrast, reflectance, and defects ensuring long term scannability. In addition, verifiers use a specific lighting setup and calibration process that follows strict ISO guidelines to
catch code defects and guarantee repeatable results. You may be required to use a verifier if you operate in an industry that enforces quality control regulations like retail, automotive, defense
or medical device manufacturing and pharmaceuticals. For example, when a pacemaker is processed, its code needs to be read properly so it can be traced back to the manufacturer or distributor if there is a defect. Even if you aren't required to verify your codes, verification can be useful because it helps increase distribution efficiency and prevent fines, penalties and safety concerns. If ISO compliant verification isn't an option for your application, Cognex has developed standards-based grading as an alternative. Using the same algorithms and diagnostic tools as verification, Standards-Based grading offers a solution better than basic quality software, but without the constraints of ISO compliant verification. Standards-based grading can be added to your existing barcode readers by installing a software feature key that can generate quality reports adhering to specific industry requirements. That's the 101 on barcode verification. For more information, visit Cognex.com/barcode-verifiers."
