What happens when a star encounters a black hole? A tidal disruption event.
When a star passes too close to a supermassive black hole or a stellar black hole, it is torn apart by the enormous force of gravity. This event is called a tidal disruption event. In some cases, however, the star can survive. Let's take a closer look at what happens to an unfortunate star that approaches a supermassive black hole and is subjected to its tidal pull.
