THE BIRTHING OF LION ~ A NEW COLLECTION OF MUSIC MEDICINE SONGS
At this time last year, I was in Victoria, BC putting the finishing touches on a new collection of songs that were birthed unlike anything I've created before.
For this record, I gave myself the gift of immersing myself in the creative process for a set amount of time with the intention of bringing a new album to life, that was many years of writing and growing in the making.
Despite booking the time well in advance, when I arrived at Baker Studios at the start of June to begin recording, I was in rough shape and felt very unprepared for the task at hand.
I had lost my voice while in Australia a month earlier and it was still not even close to 100%. In the year and months leading up to that time, I had gone through a dark night of the soul and deep grieving process as I went deep into healing old wounds, shedding layers of past versions of myself and letting go of my previously held vision to make space for something new and more aligned, for the Divine will to be made manifest through me.
I remember getting to a point where I was totally open to a change of direction and prepared to stop making music all together, if that was not for my highest good and just praying to be used as an instrument.
"Use me, dear God. Whatever you want me to do, I will do. I trust and surrender to your will."
In this space, to my surprise and delight, I was very much still being guided to make music, just in a different way, and from a different place than before.
My producer and collaborator, Joby Baker (Deva Premal & Miten, Alex Cuba) was the perfect ally to support this approach and to help midwife this new creation.
Upon my arrival at his home studio and little slice of paradise, Joby instructed me to let everything else go and give myself fully to immersing in our collaboration.
We had chatted extensively about my vision for this album, to weave a wider range of my influences and roots, to depart from traditional song forms and to create something that people could journey deep with and receive healing from.
Despite my intentions, it quickly became apparent to me that this recording experience was going to be less about making something for anyone else and more for me, for my own healing, and for my own joy and fulfillment, first and foremost.
We dove deep into three years worth of material, we shared meals together, we talked about life, love, music and beyond, and we forged a special brotherhood. What emerged has been beyond anything I could have ever imagined or asked for.
As some of you may know, I have been slowly sharing the fruits of this process through intentional gifting and allowing the creation to slowly ripple out into the world from heart to heart and hand to hand. The reception and impact have already been overwhelming and the creation has grown deep roots and wide wings within my own immediate community and soul family.
Now, the time has come for it to be shared farther and wider.
It is my great pleasure and honour to offer this glimpse into some of the behind the scenes of our sacred creative process at Baker Studios in anticipation of the official release of the title track, "Lion".
I'm also excited to announce that the first song, "Lion" will be available worldwide on all platforms on Friday, August 14th and will be released in partnership with White Swan Records & Black Swan Sounds.
