A film about those who live in a large, beautiful, dilapidated house. It's a sanatorium for the mentally ill. Ksyusha and Maxim, members of this large, forced family, are also here and are madly in love. The large sanatorium family lives within the confines of the regime and the cult-like occupational therapy, never letting go of brooms, rags, shovels, and scrapers. This is how they live, their days passing by in a single procession, no one considering the meaning of what's happening.
The sanatorium residents, compared to the parishioners "outside," are more adequate and self-sufficient. The gates of the establishment are indeed open, but no one goes anywhere, because this place is, after all, a house, scrapers, shovels... You're needed here to eat and clean. But outside the gates, no one knows if you're needed. Or rather, they know they're not.
