Since living in Japan, I've been watching TV more often to improve my Japanese and learn a little about what Japanese people like to watch. I discovered that I'm a huge fan of Japanese television myself. Not only are there so many different formats, but the quality and production value of these shows is also incredibly high. As someone who edits videos every day, I see how much work goes into the productions, and it never ceases to amaze me how the Japanese do it all. A lot of people probably work at the stations, and overtime is probably the norm.
If you're looking for more serious series or talk shows, Japan isn't the place for you. These are rare here. The vast majority of shows are more focused on entertaining and giving the viewer a good time. I personally like that, and that's why I also enjoy watching Japanese comedy (manzai). I also really like Japanese karaoke shows. J-dramas are also very popular, and food is something that's often featured on Japanese television.
