Meet Private Bill Millen
Bill was part of the Highland Light Infantry and was the personal piper to Lord Lovat, his superior officer and commander of one Special Service Brigade. Lovat stayed true to the tradition of having a piper at his side during battle, and employed Bill to his service.
Following World War I, pipers were banned on the front lines of battle because of the morale boost that they gave soldiers and the fact they were slaughtered because of this.
When Lovat, Bill and their company were called to participate in the Allied invasion of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944, Lovat requested Bill to play his pipers on shore. When Bill declined and reminded his commander of the policy, the man replied to him saying that it was a policy of the English War Office, not the Scottish.
Once their brigade began to disembark their manding craft, Bill began to play “Highland Laddie” on his pipes as men around him began to get killed. He was the only soldier there to don a kilt and pipes. Bill recalled that he saw wounded men already there shocked to see him; as they were expecting to see medics and doctors.
