Welcome to this video walkthrough for CS601: Data Communication — Assignment No. 01 (Fall 2025). In this tutorial we’ll cover the entire assignment, explain the objectives, show how to approach each question, and provide the model answers so you can confidently prepare your MS Word submission for VU-LMS before the due date: 6th November, 2025.

What this assignment covers (Objectives)
This assignment is designed to strengthen your practical understanding of:

Network topologies (how devices are connected physically and logically)

Protocol models — specifically the TCP/IP layered model and the responsibilities of each layer

Important submission instructions (read carefully)

Prepare your assignment in MS Word (.doc or .docx).

Submit via VU-LMS before 6th November, 2025 — late submissions will not receive credit.

Ensure the file opens properly (no corruption) and that your work is original — copied or partially copied submissions will be penalized.

Question 1 — Scenario & required responses (summary + explanation)
Scenario: AB-COM’s Network Department must run a video conference that involves two sections: Admin and Employees.

The Admin section has 10 computers that are directly connected to each other to ensure efficient, direct communication.

Identified topology: Mesh Topology — in a full mesh every device has a direct link to every other device, providing multiple redundant paths and high reliability. For 10 computers in a full mesh, each computer must connect to the other 9 — hence 9 ports per computer if implemented with dedicated physical ports.

The Employees section has 35 computers connected via an intelligent central device.

Device used: Switch — switches operate at the data link layer, forward frames based on MAC addresses, reduce collisions, and are the typical “intelligent” central device for modern LANs.

The video link for the conference is established from the Employees section to an external host — in the video we demonstrate how traffic flows from a host through the switch to the router and out to the internet (NAT, bandwidth considerations, and QoS notes are briefly discussed).

Question 2 — TCP/IP Model table correction
The TCP/IP model has four layers. The original table mismatched descriptions; here’s the corrected mapping you should include in your submission:

Physical Layer — Transportation of data over the medium (carries raw bits across physical medium)

Transport Layer — Reliable process-to-process delivery (TCP/UDP responsibilities such as segmentation, reliability, port numbers)

Application Layer — Access for the end user (HTTP, FTP, SMTP and the interfaces users and applications use)
