At just after 5:00AM, on June 6th, 2026, we left the South Kaibab Trailhead on a planned double-crossing of the Grand Canyon. The forecast for a of around 105 degrees and the complete shutdown of the entire water system in the canyon ensured that this adventure would be highly challenging for a pair of first timers.
We purchased filter flasks that allowed us to filter stream water and throughout the day we learned a great deal about the arid climate of high temps and low humidity that can quickly dehydrate a hiker.
In the canyon, we both experienced some heat-related symptoms that slowed our progress and forced us to consider finding a ride back to the South Rim. Despite our best efforts, we could not find a shuttle or other ride and we were compelled to return the South Rim via the trails.
At 6:30PM, we departed the North Rim and began the return trip to the South Rim. We successfully (and reluctantly) completed our Rim to Rim to Rim as the first hints of daylight began to appear on the horizon.
