Project Introduction :
Refraction is a fundamental concept in physics that describes the bending of light as it passes from one medium to another. This phenomenon occurs because light travels at different speeds in different materials. The change in speed causes the light to change direction, creating a bending effect that is both fascinating and essential in understanding how light interacts with the world around us.
When light passes from a less dense medium, such as air, into a more dense medium, such as water or glass, it slows down and bends towards the normal (an imaginary line perpendicular to the surface at the point of incidence). Conversely, when light exits a denser medium into a less dense one, it speeds up and bends away from the normal. This bending of light is what causes objects to appear distorted or shifted when viewed through water or glass.
Refraction is responsible for many everyday phenomena, such as the apparent bending of a straw in a glass of water, the formation of rainbows, and the focusing of light in lenses, which are used in everything from eyeglasses to cameras and microscopes.
