Pulling hair from a Mangalitsa piglet for MBOAR registration
In this video you can see the best way to pull hair from a Mangalitsa piglet for MBOAR (Mangalitsa Breed Organization & Registry).
MBOAR promotes tissue sampling (with TSU Gun, to order at Neogen, Nebraska) as it is the most animal friendly method for the piglets and the most reliable method to collect DNA from a young animal.
NEOGEN (GeneSeek) told us it's not easy to collect a good hair sample from a pig younger than 7-8 month of age as the follicles are often staying in the hide of the young pig! So MBOAR suggests to use the TSU Gun to get a DNA samples from piglets under 12 month of age. For the ones that want to submit hair Karla is showing how to do this.
So when you do want to submit hair samples (follicles), please follow the instructions of this video.
NOTE: Most piglets will not cooperate like this one, so make sure someone holds the piglet and bring the piglet into an space where they can not run away!
