What Is An Anesthesiologist? | Ask An Anesthesiologist
In this video, I answer a question I have received frequently from students interested in the field. Anesthesiologists often work behind the scenes and go unnoticed. Anesthesiologists are Physicians that specialize in pain management, providing and supervising patients under anesthesia, and critical care medicine.
It takes at least 8 years of education and training to become an anesthesiologist. (4 years of medical school and four years of anesthesiology residency training.) During medical school, we learn all about the human body. Anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, cell biology, etc. The list goes on and on. After finishing medical school, our residency program includes several months of rotations through the ICU, in pain clinic, on Labor and Delivery, and of course, in the operating room. This video is just a brief overview of what we do as Anesthesiologists and what our patients can expect the day of their surgery.
