In July 16, 1918, Nicholas II, the ex-tsar of Russia and now Coronel Romanov, his wife, Alexandra Fiodorovna Romanov, born Alix of Hesse-Darmstad, their five children, Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastásia and Alexis, along with Alexandra´s maiden, Anna Demidova, the family´s doctor, Eugenie Botkin, a valet, Alexis Trupp, and the family´s chef, Kharitonov, and their dogs, Jimmy and Joy, went down the stairs of the Ipatiev House, where they were living as prisioners of the bolsheviks. Nicholas was carring Alexei, who couldn´t walk because of a recent crisis of hemophilia, illnes that followed him since he was born. They had been told that the white army was invading Ekaterimburg, and, because of that, they were beeing moved to a more secure place. And they went to the atic, with no idea of what was going to happen next. Maybe, they all had the hope of, miraculously, be rescued by the whites. We will never know. The journals they rigorously maintained throughout that time ended that night.
Nicholas, the second, had once been the most powerfull man in the world. He ruled 1/6 of the earth. He was one of the richest men of his time, or even the richest. He was the emperor of Russian Empire. He was a Romanov. And, for a long while, this was sinonime of power and success. But it was also a very dangerous position. And Nicholas, the emperor who never wanted to rule, became the one who suffered the consequences of power. Some ironies of history i´ll never understand.
The socialist revolution of 1917 endend the era of the tsars. It destroyed the biggest empire of the world since the Mongols. Nicholas abdicated for himself and also for his son, a thirteen years old boy who had hemophilia, and was very smart, but also very fragile. Kerensky, a man who, for a short period of time was in the center of the power in Russia, made everything that was possible to ensure the safetyof the family. They were moved to Tobolsk, a small town were they lived surprisingly happy for a couple of months, while waiting for their final destination to be revealed. Nicholas dreamed of having a farm in England, or living in Livadia, Crimea. Maybe, for a short time, it was a real option. But, than, Lenin´s rising changed everything. The family were send to Ekaterimburg, another town filled with supporters of the revolution. This all happened between february of 1917 and july of the next year.
