Tips for cheap travel in Europe
Are you dreaming? Are you planning to travel to Europe but don't want to run out of savings? Or do you not even have those savings? Well, the great news is that traveling isn't as expensive as you imagine, and neither is traveling to Europe. Although most European countries are governed by the euro, one of the strongest currencies in the world, the reality is that there's a lot to see and do for little money.
Likewise, accommodation varies by destination, but in some places you'll be surprised by how cheap it is. And, not to mention flights, which can be found to travel from one city to another in Europe for 10 euros. Traveling to Europe doesn't have to be expensive, but you do need to learn some travel tricks, and here are a few.
Visit Europe's top museums for free
Most museums in Europe have days and times when they can be visited for free; some only during low season, like the Louvre, while others once a month, and some even every day. The important thing is to take advantage of these opportunities whenever possible.
Free Guided Tours
I think it took me a long time to discover these tours. Things have changed a lot since my first trip to Europe, over 10 years ago. These days, it's increasingly common to find free walking tours. As the name suggests, you walk through a city accompanied by an expert guide. They're free and are based on each traveler tipping what they can or consider fair. A real bargain and an excellent way to get to know a city. I've done them in Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, Stockholm, Warsaw, and Krakow.
Don't Overspend on Lodging
If you're looking for a good place to stay without sacrificing quality, but especially if you're looking to meet people, hostels are the perfect option.
Do What's Free
Museums, free walking tours, but there are also other things that can be free, such as entering St. Peter's Basilica in Rome or visiting Romeo and Juliet's house in Verona, Italy. And don't forget things like the water they give away in restaurants around the world.
Travel with only carry-on luggage
One of the cheapest ways to travel in Europe is by plane, but to really get those prices under $30 each way, you often need to travel with only the bare essentials. It's really possible! I traveled for a month in Europe with only carry-on luggage and saved over $100 on five flights. Of course, it's easier in the summer than in the winter, and it all depends on the type of traveler you are, but if you want more advice, here's a video about what's considered carry-on luggage.
