Getty Images was built on the work of millions of photographers. Then AI image tools changed the game. In this video, we look at how AI image generation changed the stock photography business, why Getty Images took legal action against Stability AI, and what this could mean for photographers and creators.

The bigger story is not just about Getty or photography. It is about what happens when human work becomes training data for AI, and the same technology later starts replacing the work that created that data. We break down the business, the lawsuit, the rise of AI images, and what the future may look like for professional photography.

Getty Images was built over thirty years on the work of professional photographers.

In 2022, it went public at a valuation of roughly $4.8 billion.

Today it is worth approximately $300 million.

The models that replaced its business were trained on the images that built it.

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL Barely Human Labs investigates modern life in the age of AI. New video every Tuesday and Thursday. Subscribe if you want to watch the next disaster before it happens. Because trust me — there's always a next disaster.

A NOTE ON HOW THIS WAS MADE LLMs were used on a very short leash to assist in production. Specifically to validate deep research and correct grammar in the script. The narrative structure, the analysis, the arguments, the beginning, middle, and end, and most importantly the comic relief are always written by me. I am not anti-AI. I am anti being stupid with AI and stupidity abounds which is precisely what creates the opportunity to make these videos. AI is a genuinely useful tool when kept on a tight leash by someone who knows what they are doing. What it cannot do is replace the thinking, the judgment, or the point of view. That limitation is not temporary. It is inherent to what these systems actually are. Which is basically the thesis of this entire channel.
