Single Quoted Text
Let’s put ‘THIS TEXT’ in some single quotes. Note that there is a difference
between left quotation marks and right quotation marks.
Double Quoted Text
Let’s put “THIS OTHER TEXT” in some double quotes. In LATEX you use
the single quotation character on your keyboard twice to produce the double
quotation marks on the right side of your text.
Nested Quotation Marks Confusion
How about some single quotation marks embedded within some double quotation
marks? First, let’s try putting ‘‘‘CONFUSION’’’ to the test.
Let’s see it: “‘CONFUSION”’. Apparently, we’ve confused LATEX. It’s
not sure if we want single quotation marks within double quotation marks
or double quotation marks within single quotation marks of if we want some
weird triple quotation marks.
The Fix for Nested Quotation Marks
The fix is a strategically placed \, .
For example, ‘‘\,‘NO CONFUSION’\,’’ produces “ ‘NO CONFUSION’ ”.
We made it clear that we want single quotation marks embedded within
double quotation marks. The “\,” command is used to produce a small
amount of horizontal space.
Using this same method, it is possible to embed double quotation marks
within single quotation marks.
