Dynamic Trim in DaVinci Resolve is designed for you to use while you are playing back your timeline in real time. It can be accessed using the Selection or Trim Edit modes. In this clip, Trim Edit is active.

1. You can activate Dynamic Trim in one of two ways. You can click on the Dynamic Trim icon (located between the Blade Edit and Trim Edit modes) or using the keyboard shortcut W.

2. When you activate Dynamic Trimming, a few things happen.

A. The Dynamic Trim Edit mode icon and playhead turn yellow.
B. If you didn’t have any clips in the timeline selected, your playhead will jump to the nearest edit point.
C. The edit point itself either turns green (if there are media handles to work with) or red (if there are no media handles to work with).

You can toggle the part of the edit point of which you want to work with by using the keyboard shortcut U.

3. Some keyboard shortcuts change in Dynamic Trim mode. J, K and L become your trimming keys. J and L ripple/roll depending on the edit point that you have selected. K still enables you to do this edit frame by frame. Comma and period also do the same thing as holding down K plus J or L (edit frame by frame). The spacebar becomes your “play around” the edit point shortcut.

4. You can toggle slip/slide by either control-clicking on the Dynamic Trim Edit icon and choosing Slip/Slide or you can use the keyboard shortcut S.
