"...It happened only twice in San Marino's history that the people experienced military occupations that lasted a few months. In 1739, the people freed themselves from the oppressive Cardinal Alberoni by means of civil disobedience and sending secret messages to the Pope to obtain justice. Clement XII recognized the rights of the people of San Marino and restored their independence."
