While birding in the Kettle Moraine State Forest (WI) we noticed a bird that seemed to be stuck in a plant. After getting a closer look, we found that it was a Dark-eyed Junco stuck in Virginia Stickseed, a native plant that has sticky seeds. The seeds cling to animals that walk past and are dispersed to new areas. A minor nuisance to most people or animals walking by, these plants can prove deadly to small birds.
