How to introduce art-based translanguaging practices
This webinar, facilitated by Lavinia Hirsu, Dobrochna Futro and Nguyen Thi Lien Huong, explores why and how teacher educators can collaborate with teachers to implement art-based translanguaging practices. The session offers insights into creative multilingual approaches that empower both educators and learners through artistic expression and inclusive pedagogy.
What is this webinar about?
To navigate a multilingual world, learners need to be able to recognise their own resources, to put them into practice and to develop innovative ways to continue to grow in their learning. But how can teachers and teacher educators engage in this learning process when they themselves are often guided and constrained by their own current educational circumstances? Join us to learn about the TEMA project (Teaching English Multilingually through Art) where we are working with teacher-educators in Vietnam to tackle the complex issues of innovation and creativity in language learning through a multilingual framework.
About the speakers
Dr Lavinia Hirsu is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Glasgow. She has recently been involved in national and international projects which have supported the development of innovative language practices in the UK, Vietnam and Kazakhstan. Dr Hirsu aims to make visible, honour and enrich learners’ multilingual experiences through the use of art-based methods and the creation of multi-dimensional learning experiences. Recent collaborations with creative artists have led to the development of professional development workshops for language educators in multilingual contexts. Her research and teaching are interdisciplinary as she works at the confluence of theories of cultural diversity and social inclusion, translingual pedagogy, sustainability and permaculture design, and emergent digital practices.
Dr Dobrochna Futro is a Lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Glasgow. Her research focuses on translanguaging, multilingualism, art-based inquiry, language learning, teaching, and language use in multilingual, often migratory contexts. Dobrochna has led and supported several projects exploring the relationship between art practice and language learning, most recently as a Co-Investigator on the Teaching English Multilingually through Art and the Multilingualism through Art projects. She has worked with teachers in Scotland and internationally, (co-)developed professional development courses and teaching resources. She leads the ELINET (Education, Languages and Internationalisation Network) Language Education and Multilingualism strand and moderates the ENROPE (European Network for Junior Researchers in the Field of Plurilingualism and Education) Language Teachers Development SIG.
Nguyen Thi Lien Huong is a TAG Facilitator on the Teaching English Multilingually through Art project. She is currently a teacher of English at 915 Gia Sang Primary and Lower Secondary school in Thai Nguyen city and has been an English teacher for 22 years.
