Netflix Spatial Audio - WHAT IS IT and Does it Make a Difference?

Netflix has teamed up with Sennheiser to implement Spatial Audio technology on a number of its streaming titles and it's said to offer more immersion than the default two channel track.
For those of us with a multi channel system at home, this probably isn't of much interest but for casual Netflix viewers or if you're watching on the go via headphones, does this offer a step up over stereo?
