In his lecture on reductionism, Robert Sapolsky mentions the types of thinking that were lost during the Dark Ages; one of these types of thinking was related to putting pieces of information together and finding out whether someone had committed a crime. Prior to this, people would rely on superstitions instead of observable facts to run the justice system!
