Transcript: Hello Everyone, and Welcome to the Ranked Tips series, where today I'm covering Player roles.
You can think of a player role like a position in normal sport where your set of strengths and weaknesses are best suited for a certain job you can fill for your team. There are no set roles in Valorant like we would see in a game like league, but there are guidelines you should know if your team is to function as a cohesive unit.
Entry Fragger - The entry fragger is the person who should make first contact with the enemy. The best entry fraggers are Phoenix and Breach, and while anyone can entry frag, the best options are people with kits that allow them to disrupt the defenders, or someone who has already used their utility for the round. The entry fragger should have quick, accurate aim, as well as the ability to peek and clear common Defender positions, and Because you're the person running into an uncleared site to die for your team, you have to have Balls Of Steel. The biggest mistake new players are making when entry fragging is being scared to die, but if the entry fragger dies allowing their team to pick up a kill, they've done their job and then some. Often teams make the mistake of being scared to die, so they sit outside the site stalling, allowing the other team to rotate, instead, someone should step up and die for the team. The most important thing to remember is that every team MUST have an entry, and even if it's not the right character to entry, someone has to step up and do the job.
Support - The support, or the 2nd man, has a very simple job, support the entry fragger. You and the entry fragger should be attached at the hip ready to trade kills as soon as the entry finds an engagement. Breach, Raze, and Jett all have kits that allow them to support extremely well due to their disruption, kill pressure, and mobility, but more important than WHO is supporting is that someone is supporting because the entry and support are useless without each other.
Utility/Control - The utility or control character is the person who splits up and controls the site, making the entry fragger and support's life easier. The best options here are Viper and brimstone, with omen being a good option as well. If you're filling the control role, it's your job to know what the trouble angles and holds are for each site, and know how to use your utility to flush out, or block vision from those angles.
In Game Leader - The in game leader is the brains of the operation, and while they can fill any of the other roles on the team as well, they are the designated strat caller, because the team needs to move as a cohesive unit requiring them to have one voice to listen to. While everyone on your team should be communicating and calling, allow the In game leader to call out when to buy, rotate, and what strategy to use, even if you dont agree with the call, it's better to do the wrong thing as a team, than to do the right thing, and let your team die without you. The leader should clearly communicate, have map awareness, and be able to think on their feet and not just rely on predefined strategies. If you're trying to become the in game leader, be confident and clear, and pay attention to that mini-map, because the only way to improve is to practice.8
Lurker/ Flanker -As you can probably tell this is the player maneuvering around sneakily looking for picks and weak points in the enemies' set-up. Omen, Jett, and Cypher fill this role extremely well. Usually when your team is taking a bomb site the lurker is looking for an alternate position to catch the rotators and enemy flankers off guard to stop the reinforcements. The flanker is slightly different, The flanker is someone who takes the long path around, attempting to full flank the enemies, play aggressively, get behind their defences, Omen and Jett are great for this role, but anyone can lurk or flank as long as they aren't designated to be the entry, support, or utility.
Operator - The Operator is the designated sniper for the team, usually the player that is attempting to lock down a site solo, or hold control of a crucial point of the map. Great choices for this are Jett to play aggressively, and Sage and Cypher, honorable mention to Viper, provided she doesn't have her ultimate available. Not every team needs an operator, but if you are the operator you need to be able to use rifles, make sure you don't die early, and make sure your team can actually afford you buying an awp, because your money is your teams money, not just yours.
