Virgin Galactic - Launch of the spacecraft "VSS Unity" | WELT LIVE
British entrepreneur and adventurer Richard Branson will fly into space on Sunday. The 70-year-old billionaire will participate in a test flight of his space travel company, Virgin Galactic. A carrier aircraft launching from the desert in the US state of New Mexico will first carry the spacecraft "VSS Unity" to an altitude of approximately 15 kilometers. The "VSS Unity," which resembles a jet fighter, will then fly to an altitude of around 90 kilometers, where passengers will experience weightlessness and be able to see the curvature of the Earth.
Virgin Galactic plans to begin taking paying space tourists into space next year. Branson is thus competing with the private space travel company Blue Origin, founded by Amazon's Jeff Bezos. The world's richest person, for his part, plans to fly into space on July 20 – as a passenger on Blue Origin's first manned flight.
