2. DeBakey Classification:
Type I: The tear involves both the ascending and descending aorta.
Type II: The tear is limited to the ascending aorta.
Type III: The tear is limited to the descending aorta.
Aortic dissections are often associated with risk factors such as hypertension (high blood pressure), connective tissue disorders (such as Marfan syndrome), atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), trauma, pregnancy, and certain genetic conditions.
Symptoms of aortic dissection can vary widely and may include sudden, severe chest pain (often described as tearing or ripping), pain radiating to the back, neck, jaw, abdomen, or arms, shortness of breath, difficulty speaking, weakness, and changes in consciousness. Because these symptoms can mimic those of other conditions, diagnosing aortic dissection can be challenging.
Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, imaging tests (such as CT scans, MRI, or ultrasound), and sometimes blood tests. Immediate treatment is essential to prevent complications. Depending on the type, location, and extent of the dissection, treatment options may include medications to lower blood pressure, surgery to repair the aorta, or endovascular procedures to place stents to seal the tear and reinforce the aorta's walls.
