An alternator is an electromechanical device that converts mechanical energy into alternating current. Most alternators use a rotating magnetic field to do this job. In fact, most alternating current generators can be called alternators, but generally alternating current generators powered by internal combustion engines are given this name.
Alternators used in automobiles charge the battery while the vehicle's engine is running and provide energy to all other electrical systems. Alternators are simpler, lighter and more durable than direct current generators since they do not have the converter required to obtain direct current. Thanks to this durability, they can operate at higher speeds, so alternators in automobiles can spin at twice the engine speed, increasing the alternator's output at idle. The alternators of today's cars have a voltage regulator. A typical automobile alternator generates the magnetic field with direct current transmitted by the contact ring. The magnetic field current is much smaller than the current from the fixed stator windings, so large communication rings are not required.
