This fresh 128GB Sandisk Cruzer landed on our operating table recently. Like always customer was in dear need of the data that was on it. 4 years of work were nicely packed inside of, what I found to be unusual for such device, eMMC memory component. Usually eMMC chips will be found on mobile devices, laptops with built in memory, and tablets. eMMC chis is a managed NAND memory component, that has both controller and the storage device in 1 package.
Quickly after inspection we were able to detect the issue that was related to 1 of the pins. Anchor points that suppose to provide non flexible bond between connector and the board had very little solder on them. No wonder that even a small amount flexing on the flash drive while connected to the USB port could be damaging to 1 of these pins. After careful inspection we were able to detect the damage and perform the repair work and recover data from this Sandisk flash drive.
This repair was extremely quick and easy to perform, but it does require having the right tools to get it done. We ran a jumper wire from a 5V pin to the end of the capacitor that it would normally lead to. THAT’S IT!!! We don’t get this lucky all of the time when recovering data from these drives. 100% of data was recovered in matter of minutes.
